I have an '05 Mustang and more than once I have gotten hung up on a parking block and torn the black plastic trim under the front bumper. I repaired it a couple of times and then I noticed a little rust stain coming from the metal tab where the whole plastic assembly mounts to the front fender on the drivers side. I took it to a body shop and they showed me where the bumper cover was torn underneath and thay said this pulled the whole assembly and bent the tab causing a crack in the paint and thus the rust. So, they repaired the tab and replaced the black trim that goes all the way across under the front and it cost $275. Now, about 6 months later my wife did it again on the passengers side this time. The plastic bumper cover is torn underneath the black rubber trim was ripped almost off, and this time there is a visable gap between the plastic and the metal fender. I can see a crack in the paint where the tab bent. It's going to have to be taken apart and fixed.
It seems to me that the metal mounting tabs are not strong enough to hold that whole front bumper cover assembly. I noticed it when I first got the car that the whole front of the car moves way too much.
Any body else having this kind of trouble?
I'm thinking that I will take it apart and try to fix it myself. The rubber trim piece is about 50 bucks from Ford.
