I tried putting my 2 1/4" new brake shoes and drum on the rear backing plate. It didn't work. The shoes went on, but they did not sit out far enough to connect them to the anchor pin. The drum went on, but not far enough. I looked at the front backing plate and saw that there is an offset to accomodate the 3/4" difference between the 1 1/2" (rear) and the 2 1/4" (front).
So I take that to mean that the correct rear shoes are 1 1/2" (unless of course someone previously changed the rear backing plate). Maybe my car was not part of the those that got the 2 1/4". I just wonder why I see so many publications listing the 2 1/4" as correct for the '66 I6 Convertible.
