Default 89 Mustang AOD to 5-speed swap...Please Help!!!

Im new to the forum and I was hoping to get some peoples feedback. I have a 89 GT in perfect conditon but my AOD tranny is blown. I was thinking of swaping the AOD to put a 5-speed in. Was wondering what everyones opinion was, should I keep it AOD or make it 5-speed manuel and if I swaped it what tranny would you recommend.

Also on a different subject I am trying to find a set of 17 inch ROH ZS wheels in a 4 lug if anyone has a set they want to sell or knows where I can find a set

Thanks, Tom

thanks for the advise...I was told that you didnt have to change the computer in fact I heard that its preferd that you dont. Is this not true? I'm also going to go with the tremec tko 500 which from what ive read is a good strong trans.

I did not change my computer. I was told by Joel 5.0 over at the SBFtech.com that the A9P has more agressive timing settings. I have also talked with some that say it doesn't take timing out between shifts. I confirmed this with Joel and vristang on the SBFtech forums. I have had no problems whatsoever with the AOD computer.

Thanks for the info.... Im going to go with the tremec tko 500. Is that a good tranny to put in? someone also told me something about hearing a pinging noise or something like that, does that sound right? and how is the shifter on the tko 500 is it any good or should i put a new one on? i also heard that the 5-speed is harder on the car and it could tear some stuff apart on the car like the torque box. is there anything i need to do with that. If theres anything else I should no i would appreciate it...Thanks

The TKO500 is a good tranny. Their shifters are ok but, somewhat sloppy. Personally, I would put in either an MGW, Pro 5.0 or a Steeda Tri-ax. I have a Tri-ax in mine. I have the T-5z in mine and beat on it regularly with no problems. Haven't heard of any pinging noises with the TKO's but, keep in mind that any tranny can have some sort of problems. Each person has their own experiences with them. Personally, I would choose whatever works for you with the power you have to output. Keep the fluid changed regularly and use a good shifter and I am sure you will be pleased with the results you get.

yeah so you think i should replace the shifter with a pro 5.0? that seems to be the one everyones talking about...also a guy had told me that there are some things on the car that were only spot welded from the factory and that with the 5-speed it is harder on the car so i might have some problems like the car is going to be ripped apart. He mentioned the torque box and i think something else but i cant remember...is that something you heard of and that i should take care of and if so how?

The 5 speed is harder on the suspension but, that is because the driver tends to be a little harder on the car, bang the shifts and drive more agressively. Just get a good set of subframe connectors with torque box reinforcement (Maximum Motorsports are about the best out there) and that will take care of it. I also did the strut tower brace and it really makes a difference with the way the car handles. Get the weld in subframe connectors but, if you want the bolt in type, just weld them as well. This makes the frame more rigid. Then the next step would be new upper and lower control arms on the rear. After all that the frame will take all the punishment you want to give it. There is one more thing you could add, but it is not a have to situation. There is a reinforcement plate that came in the SSP mustangs that goes under the front seats. That plate is available from most Mustang supply stores. It stiffens the floor where the fox tends to crack the pans. Not relly necessary but, good for peace of mind.
