Default What is the best intake for a 5.0?

Im in the process of installing gt40p heads and a tfs cam.I was wondering what was the best intake. might as well invest in one since i already got it apart. I been told just to go with a cobra/exlorer intake, but i dont know what to do.

The best all around intake I have found is the Holley Systemax II.

Holley Systemax makes a great intake, however it may be too high flow, as crazy as that sounds, which could reduce low end torque, now if you go F/I then by all means Holley FTW. I'd look into either the the Eddelbrock RPM II, or the Trickflow Track Heat intake along with a 70mm throttle body.

IMO the best all around intakes are the GT-40 style. You can pick up an explorer version pretty cheap. Port the lower and you have a great street intake for all around useage. A gt-40 style will give up a little in the upper rpm ranges, but the area under the curve is usally much better. Of course it all depends on your usage, and engine combo. What cam are you running? Just for example I run an explorer intake with Performer heads and a Comp XE-270 cam. Runs 12.7s and pull 23 mpg on the highway.

The GT-40 intakes are decent for mid range performance, and are all around decent, when ported, however even then they are not the best. Once you start to get in the upper levels of performance, such as 350-400 rwhp +, they do tend to fade out, especially if you have a cam aimed at raising the power band as even a ported GT-40 fades after around 5000 RPMs, and quickly at that. Don't get me wrong, I love my Cobra/GT-40 ported intakes, and I can't wait to get the X-303 heads on with the S/C, however, they are by no means perfect.

No intake will be perfect for every combonation. If there was it would be the only one on the market. Since the original poster was looking for a intake to go with GTP heads and a tfs cam IMO the GT40 family is a good match. Now higher flowing heads, high rpm cams, power adders and so on, would mean a different choice. I'm fairly sure with my setup at the strip I could use a different intake, but since 99% of my driving is on the street I stick with the ported explorer.
