Default Starter stays engaged.

We have a problem with our 92. It was like this when we bought it.

When you start the car the starter stays engaged for a few seconds after the motor is running. Sounds awful.

The previous owner took the car in to the ford dealer because of this problem and their solution was to replace the starter and flex plate. Guess what? It still has the same problem and the service department couldn't fix it.

Should I try to shim the starter? What else could be the problem?

These is one of these really techincal issues that could have one really simple fix, or several complicated issues.

I'd bring the car to a local reputable Firestone and let them look at it and tell you what that think. Car examinations are free as long as they don't run codes.

Sometimes the solenoid on the starter goes bad, but if you recently replaced that then I would look at the starter solenoid which is located by the ignition coil on the drivers side. It has wires going to it (including one that go to the starter) Disconnect your battery! Then check the terminals, but if it has NOT been replaced yet, since you've had it I would by another one and see what happens, keep us posted..

More than likely, it's either the starter relay(solenoid), or the ignition switch. Turn the key to the "on" position, then jump the starter from the positive terminal (from the batt cable side of the relay, to to the small 'ignition' post on the relay). If the car starts normally, and the starter doesn't run on like it's been doing, it the ignition switch. If the problem persists, it's the relay.
