Default So I'm Getting a New Engine

alright, here's my situation. got an 87 lx with a very healthy 5.0 with 212000 on the odometer. she still runs great but has seen better days. i've been talking with dss about getting a new level 20 super pro bullet 331 built and at my door the day i get back from iraq. i know a mass air setup would be best to go with the new power plant but what all will i need? i've already got a mass air wiring harness i got from a friend of mine that he had lying around (yes the complete engine harness for free, i love my friends) and i'll be getting a new 83mm mass air sensor to go along with it but would it be better to just get an a9l computer with a tweecer rt tuner or go with an aem standalone computer system? also are there any other parts i'll need?

I'm kinda in your same boat but i'm torn between building a 331 or a 408. If I go 331 i'm going with the AFM mass air tuner and the ford computer.. If I do a 408 i'm going carb. I have an 88gt so I will have to convert as well.. Idsay if you have the harness for free id go that way and have fox lake or AFM do you a set of trick flows and run the track heat intake..

I wanna run 10's consistently with minimal amount of spray so I am probably going with a mild 408 and a 150 shot.

Thank you for your service to this great nation too!

SEMPER FI! from an old worn out jar head!

well, research has let me away from dss. they have been having major problems so i'm checking into some more companies. i don't plan on getting the engine in until january 2009 when i get back from iraq and the boost won't hit the engine until probably 30000 miles after that so that it can get broken in and all the kinks worked out. i don't wanna pay for a supercharger and then have the damn heads melt or something catastrophic happen that ruins my $3k supercharger too.

You can run a supercharger on a stock motor. I was running a Vortech T-Trim race blower on my stock bottom end without any problems. You can run 6lbs of non intercooled boost without a problem. Running more then that you will need a tune. Its not the supercharger that breaks the motor, its the tune. Just keep that in mind. I ran all ford stuff on my fuel injected 359 (trick flow everything) that I built without a problem. Make sure (if you go fuel injection) to match the mass-air with the injectors.

yeah but with it already having so many miles on it i would have to tear it down, magnaflux the block, buy new internal everything because it's gotta be worn down. she still runs great but i know that if i stick a supercharger on her now then i'm gonna blow something up. i put a burnout video on my page if you wanna check it out to hear how she sounds. but back to the engine, this is also our daily driver right now so we can't just tear out the one we have because we have to have it in the car. but just for my research, who would you recommend to build an engine. you already read my part about dss and i have been checking around but i'm making sure i get someone reliable that will at least offer a short warranty so if it blows right after turning the key then i can call and get some help.

You know fear.. Half the fun of "knowing your gonna build a new motor is going out and seeing how many rods you can throw thru the oil pan of your old one...

If I was your I would buy the blower puit it on with minimal boost get your other motor ready to drop in and boost the shit out of your old motor and see how many passes it makes before it goes off like a grenade.. Your in the military you know how much fun grenades are!

alright, quick update on this part. all new plans have been made with t&l racing. the new plans consist of a 347 with the block being a dart block of course. dart pro 1 heads, forged internals, custom cut pistons and cam. efi spyder intake with 60 lb injectors,
80mm accufab throttle body with maf to match and an intercooled procharger p-1sc to handle to 15lbs of boost. bassani equal length headers with o/r x-pipe and race aft.cat system. then a new viper spec t56 with a moser built ford 9" rear with 3.89 gears. and some sweet 01 mach 1 17" rims all around. can't wait, the tranny and some of the suspension will get done in january and the rest of the suspension work and rear end will be worked out while i'm in iraq, then when i get home in december of 08 the engine will make it's entrance and then it's straight to the strip. it's all estimated to hit around 800hp so i can't wait to see what she'll do with some slicks hooked up.

I would say your combo will be closer to 600 hp, not 800 hp.I know that my 347 with a p-1sc isnt making nowhere near 800 hp.
