Take some time and crawl under the car and look for cracks in the floor pans and the torque boxes at the rear. This will tell you if the car has been beat on and driven roughly. Keep in mind that this can be fixed but, it can be a negotiating point in the sale.

Default check it over...

Take the time to drive the car and be sure to shift through all gears and down shift through all the gears as well. T-5 transmissions are known for blowing syncros and if you have to rebuild the transmission then that would be another negotiating point.
As they said, take a look at the torque boxes and look at the inner fenderwells of the rear tires, look for any rubber residue or excessive chipping. Those are also signs of abuse.

hey man i currently own a 88 gt mustang. if it has rust on the roof you are really wasting your time on this car, it is a real pain in the ass to repair. but you do want to get under the car and look to see if the floor pans are rusted. the price isn't that bad but i would over him $1800 and see if he will take it. also look at the wheel bases and see if there is any rust forming there. just know that if you ever want to put an after market cam in this motor it is not going to happen unless you convert it to a mass air flow car. generally speaking the 87 aNd 88 motors are the ones to have.
