Am installing new stroker block, ported heads comp cam and already have a ProCharger in my 2000 GT convertible. With the addition of a 75 shot of NOS I expect 450 plus to the rear wheels.
Question: The car has an automatic transmission with a stall converter. The trans has about 80,000 miles on it and don't want to spend all this money on the engine only to have the tranny fail.
Do I have it rebuilt, overhauled, or do I put in something new and stronger.
well i dont know how you made it to 80k on the tranny cause mine is giving up now with 57k miles on it. i changed my fluid twice a year and its lasted this long. what i plan on doing to mine is a rebuild with factory clutches ..also may but the parts i need to add another direct drive clutch so i can have ( i think 7 instead of 6) and a better o/d band too. also going with a lockup 3200 9 inch stall, hugh tranny cooler and a rearend breaking shift kit. everything ive read says you can use factory style clutches and get the tranny to hold over 600 ponys. there are just a few things you need to make better to get it there. i just dont have 3k sitting around to buy a high dollar built tranny and stall converter. with my mods i should be making around 325-350 ponys on the bottle with a 430 gear.before you spend alot of money do alot of research on other sites. no matter where you go ur going to get diff opinions. good luck.
racer was right..perhaps putting something new and stronger, of course with good performance and quality was the only great solution..what i used to do with my car was an scheduled maintenance with ford parts (ex:ford wheels)..perhaps another idea would be great...
I have a stroker with crane cams , stall , vortech sq s trim with aftercooler and more on a 1999 Gt and I have had my tranny built three times in two years finally I built it with to racing specs with a shift kit and a tune . It shifts hard but I beat the standards at the track with pretty much the same mods by a second or more ! And I never miss a gear . Rebuild it .
hey man, i have an auto tranny in my as well and i have done alot of research on a similar topic. i have heard and read that putting a c-4 with a trans brake and a new higher rpm rated stall converter will prob give you what you are looking for. it can give you just as good of a start or better than a manual, you will also never miss a gear so you will have alot of consistency in your times if you are going to drag your car. o also the c-4 is rated up to around 900 hp. hope the info helps you out. good luck.
If you've got the money, lentech (lentechautomatics.com) is one of the big race trans' companies out there that will hold up and they have different options.
If you do nothing or rebuild with stock parts, it probably won't last long. A shift kit will help keep the clutch slipping to a minimum but those factory autos aren't made to take that kind of abuse.
If you do decide to rebuild, better use some well built racing clutches, etc if you want to keep from doing it again.
