Default Question for experienced stang drivers.

I have a quick question, and im sure thatsome may flame me for it but whatever. I need to know if a swap using a V6 mustang (1999-2004) has ever been done.

The engine im wondering about is the 5.4 out of the Cobra R. I know that certain things were done to fit the engine into the bay, such as larger hood to fit the intake and little things like that. Now I know finding a 5.4 engine is not going to be easy, but before I even start looking I want to know if this is even possible.

If not I would like some input on how hard it is to drop in a 4.6 or possibly an old 5.0.

Thanks,
Biggie

It can be done, but it will be pricey. The motor alone will cost at least 20-30 thousand dollars. If you can find one. You will need the entire drive line and computer. It would be easier to use a Lincoln Navigator's motor. It is also a 32 valve, DOHC motor. You will also need the entire drive line of it as well, but it is a whole lot easier to find one. It all depends on how much money you want to spend. There was only 300 Cobra "R" in 2000. I dont think many owners will let them go cheap.

yah I do realize it would be pricey, im thinking about grabbing some other 5.4 and transmission and doing it that way. I just miss my mustang , and I dont want to go back to the amount of insurance I was paying for a 5.0. So really this is all just hopes and dreams

Dont give up on it so soon. Go make it happen, you wont be happy without it. There was also a 2000 Silver GT with a Lincoln 32 valve DOHC motor in it for sale on the Corral.net I think he was wanting $12,000 dollars for it. Might be the easiest way of getting one! I think it was in Maryland.

They did a 5.4L 2 valve in a fox body in one of the Mustang mags, not sure if it was MMFF or 5.0 so there was a bunch of articles about it, the new edge cars are the same basic platform as the fox so many things would be similar. The thing about the 4 valve 5.4L is that it needed some other specialty items to fit in the Mustang, one was a one off master cylinder as the heads were too wide and hit the stock one. There are probably alot of things like that but nothing's impossible and you will have to mock it up in the engine bay and figure out what will and won't fit.

Good luck

another thing to consider is that you will have to swap out the k-member and other various suspension components.

There are one or two guys in P/S running mod motors in fox bodies, it is not as hard as one might think. But! Getting a donor car, is the easiest way.
It would be worth it, if I had it to do all over again - shoot I have been considering doing a mod motor swap to our 66 coupe.

I wouldnt do a 5.4 just drop a just by a brand new 5.0 crate motor and a painless wiring harness and save some money.

from what ive read the 5.4 2 valve will fit. everything plugs and goes and can even run it off your factory tune. bolts to your t45/tremec 3650/4r70w trans, alt power steering pump,a/c will bolt up but im sure there will be something that will need attention. have to have custom headers made or run the factory mans but will have to have h-pipe played with. i know i know the 32 valve will be better but still the 2 valve will be cheaper and still make one hell of a street car. also you will need special plates to get you pi intake to work. im waiting for my motor to give up so i can start on that project right here!
