Unhappy Car Audio Trouble '02 GT - CD Player Busted

My 6-disc stock cd player has up and died - the cd door is stuck open and it keeps showing "CD ERROR" if you try to play a cd or eject a cd. My dealership said they could pull it apart and check it out but aside from sending it somewhere to be fixed or just ordering me a new one, I know they won't be much help.

Any suggestions?

This is a common trend with these in-dash 6-disc units. Mine does it as well...I've really gotta play with it to get the CD to eject. Something about one of the gears that ejects the disc gets worn and stripped over time.

From what I've read elsewhere, Ford's gonna charge a rather substantial amount to replace that subpar head unit. You're probably better off going aftermarket at this point (though you're not gonna find any in-dash CD changers in the aftermarket).

If you're dead-set on having the Ford unit, maybe check eBay for a working unit. One note though...the '04 head unit has some slightly different connection on the back of it versus the '01-'03 head units. They look identical up front, but the pinouts on the back or something aren't compatible.

Personally I'm looking at getting an all new unit. Something that's got Bluetooth, CD/DVD/MP3 capability, and a touchscreen. I only want the DVD part for more storage capacity on the disc (which means more MP3s on one disc)...not for playing movies.

I've had this same problem on my 02 GT with the 6-Disc Changer. When mine does that, it's like Frank was saying, one of the CDs is stuck. I've managed to free them by putting a piece of thicker paper, like a card or something, in the CD slot and moving it back and forth and the CD has popped out. When the CD ejects, you can start using it again. If that doesn't work, then you probably are better off going to an aftermarket unit.

Hey yeah mine has done the same exact thing, but I found out how to make the cd come out! I just grabbed an older cd (that you don't mind getting scratched up) and I wedged it over the top of the cd that was stuck in the player, and then it pops out! Hope that works for ya. But yeah, I agree with the other guys. I would just go with a totally new cd player.

i think all of us with a 99 to 04 mustang have had that problem.what worked for me was using a flate head screwdriver. a small thin one and pushed the cd back into the player.it then loaded the cd and i was able to eject the cd.if that works it is only going to work a couple timesbefore it goes copmletly dead

19 days. Wow.

That's how much time there was between the original post and...guess what...MY CD player crapped out on me.

Happened today. Left work and was on my way to my teaching job, listening to some 311. Disc ended, it tried to change and got stuck. Started hearing a god awful grinding noise. I tried again to "force" the disc change...no luck. More grinding. Then I switched the radio on and then back into CD mode. Nothing. *sigh* Gave up, taught the class, and came out to the car afterwards...when I fired the car up, the radio let out that ugly grinding again...so here I am "stuck" with just radio and no CDs.

Oh well. Just all the more reason for me to go get my fancy-schmancy new head unit sooner. Heh.

Geez, the ghosts and Goblins attacked your stereo a day early!

I'm sure if I drove my car every day that I would have already replaced the stereo and Crutchfield would have even more of my money!

Same ole story. These disc changers start acting up, you knock the crap out of them and they work for a while, then the mess up again, etc.... then one day knocking the crap out of them no longer works. I am driving around right now with 6 CD's in mine that I can not listen to, and waiting on my quarterly bonus to buy an AVIC-D3. The only problem I have with that is my passenger side door speaker is vibrating pretty bad. My glue on wheel weights came off for a while and caused some very bad vibration in my car. Hopefully something is loose causing the vibration, or I will be looking a speaker set. Alot of us feel you pain. This is a major Ford problem, that Ford ignores.
