Default Cold Air Intake

Here's the deal. I have an '01 V-6 with a Gt Exhaust system... I'm a college kid, so I don't have a ton of money, but I want some more outta my mustang. I know it'll help out my gas mileage... and give me some horse power (enough to put me into the 200 hp range where the 6's should have been to begin with). Would it be smarter for me to just put in a K&N Filter or eat it and buy the cold air. The biggest thing is I want the most bang for my buck. Name and looks don't really matter so much as it works!

Someone told me it'll rumble a bit more with the cold air (which...I didn't think was true...buuut maybe you guys can true/false that one.)

There's an air silencer in the stock filter housing, if you remove it to install a cold air, it will make a bit more noise as the air comes straight in the MAF and won't be baffled.

I personally would only use a K&N if your installing a cold air kit, the K&N replacement filter will do almost nothing for performance and can potentially coat your mass air flow sensor with oil, doesn't filter as well as the stock filter, and may not fit as well as the stock filter. Usually none of these will happen but it's possible and, in my eyes, isn't worth the gamble to get the realistic 1hp you MIGHT get from the K&N.

If your using a cold air kit, it will most likely come with the K&N and you won't have a choice, it's a trade off for having the upgraded performance and most cold air kits mount the filter further away from the MAF so the likelyhood of MAF coating is reduced.

If it was me, I'd do the cold air kit, if you can't afford it, don't do anything.

that's kina what I figured... What's a good cold air kit for the 6's? I was lookin at BBK but I'm not really that familiar with it.

Not sure what's good for sixes, BBK's probably good. One other thing, if you do get one that relocates the filter to the fender, watch for big puddles when driving. Moving the filter out of the engine compartment increases the chances for water ingestion which will ruin your engine. They are more effective than the ones under the hood but you gotta watch it.

hmm Ok... If I do see it, does it mean it's failing? and where will I see the water? in the engine compartment on the fender or will it be running down like it's A/C water?

I meant you don't want to drive through big puddles of water, the water can splash up and get sucked into your engine because the filter would be closer to the ground.
